Hyundai saved one of the biggest surprises of the Munich IAA Mobility Show for last: the Concept Three, a sleek EV hatch that could become the brand’s sharpest-looking Ioniq yet. Forget about another SUV or crossover—this one’s a proper low-slung hatch, and it’s brimming with personality.

A Veloster for the Electric Age

Even without the Veloster’s famous asymmetrical doors, the Concept Three immediately calls that car to mind. Its coupe-like profile, aggressive stance, and pixel-packed lighting make it stand out in a world where crossovers dominate. Painted in Tungsten Grey with a wide, planted look, the car measures 4,288 mm long with a generous 2,722 mm wheelbase, giving it proportions usually reserved for larger cars. That’s the beauty of Hyundai’s dedicated EV architecture—compact on the outside, roomy inside.

Design That Pops

Hyundai calls it an “Aero Hatch,” and it’s easy to see why. With intersecting lines from the brand’s Art of Steel design language, a swooping roofline, and upright rear glass, it’s a mix of practicality and performance flair. The show car goes full concept with its diffuser, side vents, and center-lock wheels, but even toned down, the production version should keep the drama. Expect the wild rear doors to disappear, though.

Inside, the Moonbeam Yellow cabin feels like stepping into a gaming console. Playful details like the “Mr. Pix” mascot add character, while the pod-like seats and modular dashboard ditch the traditional touchscreen setup. Drivers can mount their own widgets to customize the layout—a bold break from convention.

What to Expect in Production

Hyundai insiders suggest the production version will arrive in Europe as the Ioniq 3 from 2026, taking direct aim at VW’s upcoming electric Golf. It’ll share its underpinnings with Kia’s EV4, meaning 400-volt tech, likely single- and dual-motor setups, and two battery choices. Top trims could deliver up to 390 miles (628 km) of range.

Design boss Simon Loasby has already hinted that toned-down versions will come first, but the diffuser, transparent spoiler, and flared arches we see here could return in a future N performance model.

The Big Picture

Hyundai’s been on a roll with bold, unconventional EV design—and the Concept Three keeps that streak alive. Compact, stylish, and refreshingly not another crossover, it could be the small electric hatch enthusiasts have been waiting for. If the production car stays as close to this concept as Hyundai promises, the VW ID. Golf may have a serious problem on its hands.
